About Us

Indigenous Friends of the Mau Forest (IFOTMF) is a youth-led Non-Governmental Organization registered with the NGOs Coordination Board of Kenya. Founded by young environmental and Indigenous rights activists, IFOTMF is committed to advocating for the conservation and restoration of the Mau Forest Water Catchment Tower (MFWCT), which faces severe threats from illegal encroachment and environmental degradation. We aim to promote harmony between the forest and the Indigenous communities living nearby by supporting sustainable livelihoods, fostering social and economic empowerment, and safeguarding Indigenous Peoples' rights. We also align our work with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16 & 17) to ensure holistic and inclusive development.

We aim to strengthen the relationship between these communities and the forest by promoting its value and importance to their livelihoods and culture. IFOTMF also seeks to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect the Maasai Mara National Reserve ecosystem, which depends entirely on the health of the Mau Forest Water Catchment Tower, the source of the Mara River and other cross-border rivers.
