On July 3rd, 2025, a team from Indigenous Friends of the Mau Forest (IFOTMF), in partnership with Narok Albinism Association (NAA) and 2bongenaToshProduction, embarked on a mission that was more than just planting trees; it was about planting hope. Our destination was Ngoswani Primary School, a humble institution nestled deep in Narok South Sub-County. Though located in a remote area bordering a wildlife conservancy, this school holds within its fences something remarkable: dreams as vast as the savannah. We began the day with a tree planting exercise, a symbolic gesture to promote forest cover and environmental conservation. But beyond the trees, we sought to nurture something even more enduring: the minds and hearts of the young learners. Our team engaged the pupils in a mentorship session, speaking candidly about the power of education and the real dangers of early pregnancies, female genital mutilation, and drug abuse. Their bright eyes and eager questions told us one thing: these children are ready to shape a better future, if only given the chance. Then came a moment none of us will forget. We were invited by the school’s Wildlife Club to witness a series of performances by the students. One by one, they took the stage, singing, reciting poetry, performing skits and left us in awe. From deep in the heart of Narok, we had discovered raw, untouched talent. It was so moving; we couldn’t help but declare: “Ngoswani Got Talent.” And indeed, it does. But behind their talents and resilience lie serious challenges. In conversations with the teachers, we learned that many students walk for miles to get to school, while some have had to rent small rooms in the nearby shopping centre just to stay close to class. For a child, the journey is not only long but dangerous; wildlife roam freely nearby, and predators of another kind lurk in the shadows. Girls, especially, are vulnerable and often lured by motorcycle riders (boda boda) under the guise of offering help, only to fall victim to exploitation. Moved by these stories, we joined the school administration in making a heartfelt appeal: to well-wishers, partners, and compassionate individuals; to kindly help Ngoswani Primary build dormitories. A boarding facility would not only ease the burden of travel but also protect these children from harm, and most importantly, give them a safe and stable environment to focus on their education. At Ngoswani, we found more than a school; we found a community full of promise. A place where trees were planted not just in soil, but in souls. A place where children, against all odds, dare to dream big. If you ever wish to see where the future of Kenya is quietly growing, visit Ngoswani Primary School. Hope lives here. Talent thrives here.
